What bats-core is

Bats (Bash Automated Testing System) is a TAP-compliant test framework that requires Bash 3.2 or later. It checks that UNIX programs behave as expected, with Bash software as the main target. A test file is a Bash script that defines test cases with an @test syntax. Each test case runs as a function with a description. Test cases contain standard shell commands. Bats runs them with Bash errexit enabled, so a test passes when every command exits with status 0. The bats-core repository is the community-maintained fork of the original Bats project, which is now archived.
