What Appium is
Appium is an open-source automation framework that offers WebDriver-based automation for mobile, desktop and IoT platforms. It targets native, hybrid, mobile web and desktop apps. Support for platforms such as iOS, Android, macOS and Windows comes from drivers installed through its extension CLI. Official client libraries exist for Java, Python, Ruby and .NET C#. Third-party clients cover other languages. Plugins extend the server without changes to its code and are enabled at startup. The core server installs from npm and automates nothing until drivers are added. Parallel server processes and parallel driver sessions are supported.
